Earlier this year, 4evergreen published updated protocols for assessing the recyclability of paper and board packaging, aiming to harmonize standards across the EU. This initiative aligns with the newly published Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) from February, which sets an ambitious target of 90% recycling rate by 2030.

The updated protocols cover:
  • Part I: Recycling in mills with conventional processes
  • Part II: Mills using flotation-deinking processes
  • Part III: Mills specialized in recycling used beverage cartons (UBC)
recyclability analysis
RISE PFI is pleased to announce that we now offer recyclability analysis based on Part I and Part III of the protocols.

Part III includes additional assessments of fiber quality and considers the recycling of polymer/aluminum layers, increasing the share of recyclable material in packaging. The results of these analyses are compiled into a Technical Recyclability Score, providing a clear indication of a fiber-based product’s recyclability.

In parallel, RISE PFI is developing a method to quantify microplastics in the wastewater of recycling mills.

As 4evergreen continues to refine its assessment methods, RISE PFI remains committed to implementing updates and supporting the transition to more sustainable packaging solutions.
