“New biobased epoxy compounds for high performance applications”

Epoxy resins are advanced chemicals widely used in construction and coating applications. They already contribute to sustainability by protecting and extending the lifespan of various items such as offshore installations, cars, aircraft, and household appliances. However, there are concerns about their fossil origins and toxic composition, posing threats to both the environment and human health. More sustainable and safer alternatives to conventional epoxy compounds with similar performances as their original counterparts are therefore in high demand.

The NordiCoats project shall establish an innovative platform for the development of sustainable bio-based epoxy binders through a deeply interdisciplinary approach. The goal is to develop a new generation of epoxy resins based on advanced biotechnology. Precursors for the epoxy resins, such as microbial oils and biopolymers, will be produced from lignocellulosic sugars, as well as by upgrading by-products from biorefineries. These compounds will be chemically and/or enzymatically activated and then combined with advanced nanotechnology to generate new bio-based epoxy compounds and resins with unique properties. The bio-based epoxy resins will have positive environmental impacts and shall have comparable performance with the existing epoxy resins.

The new epoxy formulations will undergo thorough functional testing, along with assessments of safety, environmental impact, and economic viability. The objective is to identify the best alternatives for use as binders in high-performance coatings, particularly within the maritime sector.
