Value creation from agrifood side streams within the circular bioeconomy
The main goal of the AgriFood project is to develop the knowledge platform and methods for valorization of Norwegian agrifood side streams into high quality value-added food and feed ingredients and biogenic oligomers/polymers (starch, cellulose/nanocellulose, hemicelluloses, poly-/oligomers, lignin). We will follow the principle that the economically most feasible components will be extracted first, and that this follows the order: recovered proteins > fibres > biopolymers / oligomers > monosaccharides. The monosaccharides will subsequently be fermented to single-cell proteins and value-added compounds. The process development will focus on simple, flexible and water-based unit operations that can be combined and scaled according to the need of each side stream / product, facilitating decentralized production.
