New Hybrid Paper
The project aims to develop cellulose-based, sustainable and biodegradable materials that can substitute fossil-based plastics which are used for a short period of time and then thrown away. Cellulose is one of few sustainable raw materials available in sufficiently large quantities to replace fossil plastics in various applications. The stability of cellulosic-based materials will be improved by combining with specific hybrid polymers (ORMOCER®s). The products in focus are a paper-based mulch film and a cellulose-based film for food packaging. The severe littering problem caused by non-degradable plastic mulches on agriculture fields can be solved and fossil-based plastic films used as food packaging can be replaced with more sustainable alternatives.
